JANUARY 2010

Peggy Kingsbury
participated in the benefit paint-out for Camp Fire USA in October. The
four-day event included 35 invited artists painting the Fort Worth
Botanic Garden. Each artist donated one piece for a December
auction/sale. In addition, each donated a two-hour “quick draw” painting
for a silent auction at the Champagne reception on the final day.
Kingsbury was awarded second place for her quick draw painting of
Ashley, one of the quick draw models.
Judy Crowe
states, "I
was very very excited to receive an invitation right before Thanksgiving
to become a signature member of American Women Artists (www.americanwomenartists.org).
I was not expecting this at all since I have not been in any of their
shows. It was out of the all since I have not been in any of their
shows. It was out of the blue so needless to say I was very surprised
but very thankful and excited to become a member."
Ann
Templeton reports,
"I have
joined two new galleries, Wimberly and Fredericksburg, and will have a
one-woman show in Claremont, Georgia on Memorial day. I am also
rejoining Ann Buell's in Ruidoso in the spring."

Pam
Flanders describes her activities... "It HAS been a busy end of 2009
and beginning of the 2010 for me...I am in 4 simultaneous shows this
month, not counting the show ending at the Studio on the Park in Paso
Robles. They were/are all local shows. One of my venues was a new
contemporary condominium building at 2121 SE Belmont St that had empty
lease space on street level near downtown Portland. The large empty
office space was offered to me free of charge until rented. The
residents were so pleased to see me filling those empty walls with fine
art and hoped I would make it an official gallery. Ah, ha....lots of
great compliments and a few sales. However, it seems my presence there
for 3 months enticed someone to finally lease the space after 2 years of
seeking businesses to do so. They achieved their goal and I had great
exposure in a new upcoming area of town. A solo show at another
downtown building on the SW Waterfront:
www.theardea.com at the 30th
floor Penthouse Gallery began in Nov and continued through the end of
the year. Now I still exhibit there with 2 other local art buddies
through the end of this month. It participates in Portland's First
Thursday Art event originating in the famous Pearl District. I also
have a solo show at the US Bank Lobby on 16th and Weidler St in Portland
continuing to the end of this month as well as a group show at the
Aurora Gallery in Vancouver, WA."
Arizona Artist,
Ginger Bowen,
was recently asked to become a Master Signature Member of American Women
Artists. She also won the prestigious National Arts Club Award at the
Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club 113th Annual Open Exhibition, held in
New York. Upcoming events include the newly formed AZ-Eight Art Group's
"Color Fast" Show and Sale. The show opens March 10 and runs through
April 10, 2010 at SunDust Gallery in Mesa, Arizona.
Ann Dettmer
reports exciting news...
|
"Sometimes a different
perspective is good; I have one this year.
For a year I neither created nor sold much visual art.
Instead I created, as best I could, a safe and loving
environment in which my mother could live her final year in
her home. Sometimes when I thought about my career during
that time of caretaking, I thought: "I used to be a
painter." I can exhibit a flair for the melodramatic when
pressed.
So now, almost four months after Mother's passing, I again
have solitude, opportunity for long stretches of
contemplation and reading... the things which feed and
inspire me to play with color and shape and to make marks on
paper and canvas. My gratitude is poignant and, yes,
bittersweet, for it was her passing which opened again this
space of quietude which has always been so important to me.
I am again open to the the energy, excitement, magic which
inform my work and allow it to thrive, inspiring myself and
others. I am not starting over but certainly continuing
fresh, new, in some ways innocent... yet deepened.
So while many of you may be talking about paints, framers,
which galleries are doing best, classes you are teaching,
shows, painting trips, etc... I am relearning how to float
in the stardust at night, to find the universe in a poetic
line, and to walk even through grief, fear and regret (along
with joy, love and kindness) with a sense of the magic of
life. This feels deeper than exciting to me; it feels more
like renewing.
I do have two solo shows summer 2010: oils at Smith Klein
Gallery in Boulder CO and mixed media explorations at the
Durango CO Art Center Art Library. I guess having a chance
to rebuild my career and my attitude is the good news I have
to report. And that I am alive, thriving and learning to
celebrate it all. I wish you all well. |

AUGUST 2009
Ann Templeton was recently named
"Master Landscape Artist" by three organizations: The
Nomades del Arte, Plein Air New Mexico, and Plein Air
Colorado."
Mary Ulm Mayhew participated in
the 44th Annual Manito Art Show in the fabulous North Woods
(Manitowish Waters, WI) July 16th through 19th.
The juror was Nancy Lamers, Art Professor, Alverno College,
Milw. WI. The judge’s comments on Mary’s painting,
“Mississippi Migration”: "This is a gem of a painting,
small yet full of impact. The gestural hand in laying down
individual strokes of paint is deft and experienced.
Selected daubs of color, pink spots connecting to pink above
and below and blue spots in the foliage connecting to the
blue of the sky make good use of color repetition. The oil
paint itself is juicy with gorgeous strokes, their built-up
edges being allowed to speak for themselves as beautiful
paint."

Mississippi Migration, Oil,
10x12
Mary adds, “As an interesting note,
Manitowish Waters is the home of "Little Bohemia" where
"Public Enemies" was filmed in part. Pretty exciting to see
the real bullet-riddled windows in the lodge;
and the place was filled with tourists, so we had a big turn
out at the exhibit and tons of sales."
From Pam Flanders:
“I am in three simultaneous exhibits here in OR at the
moment. I am very pleased to be in the upcoming statewide
exhibit for PAPO (Plein Air Painters of Oregon) entitled
"Celebration Oregon", honoring Oregon's Sesquicentennial.
Forty artworks were juried into the show, which will be
displayed for the month of October at the High Desert Museum
Gallery in Redmond, OR and will be highly publicized. The
opening reception will be Oct. 2nd from 5-9 PM.”
Pam’s work is also in the Arts Alliance of Clackamas
County's "Art in Public Places" juried exhibition, which
will hang through August. She also has seven works at the
Developmental Services Building Gallery through Sept 11th.

MARCH 2009
FROM LIBBY TOLLEY:
Libby has a brand new website;
check it out at:
http://www.elizabethtolley.com.
Her book, Oil Painter's Solution Book: Landscapes,
has sold so well that it's going into reprint!
She has upcoming workshops in Fallbrook, CA (class is full);
in Farmington, NM, May 4-8; Los Osos, CA, September 14-18;
and Paso Robles, CA, September 21-25. She will also be
participating in the California Art Club 98th Annual Gold
Medal Juried Exhibition, April 26 - May 17, and Twilight on
the Terrace, Hearst Castle - The Inaugural 2009 Plein Air
Invitational, June 6. Look for details on these events on
Libby's website.
FROM CHARLOTTE ABERNATHY:
I've been putting most of my creative energy into poetry
these days, putting together some chapbooks of my poems, and
participating in poetry readings around the state. Right
now, I'm trying to incorporate some of my paintings with my
poetry to publish an illustrated collection. I do have a
few art items to share: I'll be giving an oil painting
demo this month for the Southern Oregon Society of Artists,
in which I'll show some ways capturing the excitement of
outdoor painting while painting from photos or slides. This
summer I'll be participating in a weeklong artists'
residency at the Fields Project in Illinois, followed by an
exhibit. |

January 2009
From Ginger Bowen:
"Alternate Reality", 2 Person show with Ginger Bowen and
Fred Calleri;
February 23-March 9th; Gallery MAR, Park City, UT.
Artist's Reception: Friday, February 27; 6-9pm.
Ginger Bowen's painting "Up on Blocks" was accepted into
CAC's 98th
Gold Medal Exhibition 2009.
From Ann Templeton:
I’m a signature member of an organization called Plein Air
of Colorado, and
was recently named (per artists' vote) "Master Landscape
Artist" for their
group. Consequently I will be the featured artist for their
group when they
do their annual show in Dallas, early April, at the
Southwest Gallery of
Art.
From Lindy Duncan:
As of Jan 1, 2009, I am no longer part of the Portola
Gallery in Allied Arts in Menlo Park. It was a decision I
made for various reasons and I will sadly miss the other
members of the gallery. I will continue to be represented by
DE Craghead Gallery, Carmel, CA; Nancy Dodds Gallery,
Carmel, CA; Ayre Hill Gallery, Vienna, VA; and the Banana
Gallery Hawi, HI. On the happy side of this decision was the
move we made to Atherton and the wonderful studio space I
now have. It is providing me not only a sunny and beautiful
place to paint but with an opportunity to invite people to
view my art and buy from me at the studio. Please feel free
to contact me if you would like to come by. I will continue
to teach workshops so please feel free to contact me. My
fall schedule will include Santorini, Greece, October 3-10.
For information on this workshop and early sign-up discount
see
www.toscanaamericana.com. This is a wonderful painting
location and will be a trip to remember. Bring home
beautiful memories in your paintings that will last a
lifetime. |

Message to members from
Evelyne Boren:
I feel badly for not having been part of the
group's painting sessions. I keep hoping one of these days! I travel
a lot with my husband, Michael, now 83, and painting for 2 to 3 one-person shows a year as well as my 3 watercolor classes per year
(which I organize and run myself).
Next annual one-person opening
is at Nedra Matteucci Fine Art in Santa Fe. September 28th, 2007. 95%
oils and only 5% watercolors, a big ratio change. I am thoroughly
enjoying painting with palette knives. Please come to the opening
should you be in town. In February, I received an E Mail from
Roberta who manages Nedra’s Canyon Road Gallery, congratulating me
as having become their number one seller. I was delighted, to say the
least. But all that success keeps me on my toes and close to my
easel. My classes both in Mexico, Provence and Tuscany have been
sellouts every year, and if you would ever like to venture into
watercolor, just to loosen up and get some color theory, come and join
me; we have a lot of fun!
Next year's dates are Sayulita, Mexico, March
1 to 7th, 2008 . Provence, June 20th to 30th, and October 27th to November
6th, Tuscany. Both European classes are gourmet painting classes; we
wine and dine for 7 hours per day, paint for 5 and sleep the rest.
Not a bad ratio! But despite the fun we do come home with at
least 14 watercolors.
Please don't give up on me, I miss you all! Happy painting Evelyne
Paintings shown:
 | Lilly Pond at Valaurie, France, 30" x 40",
oil |
 | Cheryl's View, Sayulitaoil, oil, 52" x 48" |
 | Sunday Market, Willoc Peru, oil, 40" x 46" |
 | Venizian Magic, oil, 30" x 36" |

Mary Ulm-Mayhew
was in two recent Wisconsin competitions and gives us this report:
The Cedarburg Artist Guild
Competition, in its seventh year, just ended. It is always the week starting
with Father's Day and ending the following Saturday. Cedarburg is just 30
min. north of Milwaukee and has a large concentration of Historic Stone
Houses, as well as a wonderful main street -- always active and evolving.
Anyone is eligible to enter the competition, and the first award is $2000.
Total sales this year were in the neighborhood of $30,000 -- great for a
two day silent auction.
The Downer Avenue Milwaukee Plein Air
competition was held at the end of May. It is sponsored by the League of
Milwaukee Artists and the Downer Avenue Merchants Assn. and is named for a
street in Milwaukee, that is 2 blocks from the Lake front (Lake Michigan).
Downer Avenue has an "Art Theater", great local produce and has the feeling
of Old Milwaukee; it’s about two miles from Downtown. Palatial homes, Villa
Terrace Museum and the Beaches were all included in the areas to paint. The
awards were $1500, $700, $400 and some great gifts from the local merchants.
If anyone wants a vacation to WI again, consider participating next year.
