| Although Charlotte has been best known as a pastelist,
she has begun to work in both oils and acrylics as well, and has
found new inspiration in their qualities -- the juicy brushwork
possible with oils, and the speed of changes allowed by quick-drying
acrylics. She has always been an intuitive painter, who
develops a painting responsively while she works, finding she
obtains freer, fresher results when she doesn't do too much
pre-planning. Rich color and a strong sense of light continue to
characterize her paintings, but she has begun to define shape more
clearly than in her earlier, more impressionist work. The
landscape remains her primary subject, and she paints on-location in
many areas. In 2006, she painted for a month at an
artist's retreat in Montana, for two weeks in Wisconsin (with
Alla Prima) and for two weeks in Tuscany. The varied
scenery of the Pacific Coast states continues to inspire her,
particularly mountains, farms and shorelines.
Charlotte's studio is located in Ashland, OR, (one of the top twenty small art towns in the country) where she finds inspiration in the town itself as well as the surrounding farms, mountains, streams and forests.
